A little known but brilliant book from the author of "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil" that was made into an excellent movie by Clint Eastwood.

Its a modern day account of the last 100 years of Venice including a cast of villains, vagabonds, artists and entrepreneurs and a few more besides.

The title refers to the masonry pieces that fall off the edifices, so named by one of the city's artists trying to restore these historic monuments.

Berendt spins his story around the burning of the famous Fenice Opera House and the ensuing drama, comedy and tragedy that is related and results from this.

I am not sure how real many of the characters are in this book, they are however unforgettable and in the end it doesn't matter; its a great read for any occasion, in any place you may find yourself.
